FINAL RESEARCH PROJECT
My photographer's name was Gordon Park. He was born in 1912 and died in 2006. Gordon Park was African American, so he was born in America. Gordon Park grew up in a life of poverty, and segregation. A great example was his school, which was hugely segregated. He contributed in many civil rights movements, and freedom marches.
His photos have powering, and moving visuals about the harshness of life.
Every picture seems to have a story or background, showing the truth of segregation, and poverty. Seeing his images really make us think about America’s past. They help us to understand what it was he grew up with. And to understand his message, and purpose.
Basically, his goal was to show issues in America most people don’t pay attention to through photography. So I would say this was social. I say that because he wasn’t convincing anyone of anything, he was just showing how the world really is for some people. He was showing civil rights in a way that induced emotion. I believe he did this to get attention to the harsh community he grew up in.
Gordon Parks has influenced my work in a few ways. First I would say that he has showed me that when taking photos, having a story or purpose makes it better. Second, I think he showed me that photography can really help a specific cause, or environment. Also, these pictures you’re about to see are literally his photos just from my camera. His photos really do invoke emotion, and with photography I think that’s important.
